What Is It?
Marmot Down Defender is an insurance policy for your down garments and sleeping bags. This specially treated highly water-resistant down offers an extra level of moisture protection for down garments and sleeping bags exposed to wet environments. Down Defender helps prevent down from clumping and losing its loft when exposed to water, thereby greatly increasing its ability to keep you warm and comfortable.

We currently use Down Defender in our Snowsports, Urban Exploration and Kids collections and in many of our sleeping bags.

How Does It Work?
The treatment coats the individual plumes of the down cluster with a DWR (durable water repellent) at the molecular level. It puts a hydrophobic layer on each individual plume of the cluster. This treatment is done during the down cleaning process. The finish is extremely durable allowing the down to maintain its water repellency over 20 washes. The treatment also enhances the down's integrity and the durability of the cluster helping to increase its longevity.

What Are The Benefits?
Down Defender garments and sleeping bags stay drier longer, maintain their loft better and dry faster than conventional untreated down items.

RDS – RESPONSIBLE DOWN STANDARD

Vi garanterer at metoder som plukking av levende dyr og tvangsfôring ikke finner sted, og at dunet er et biprodukt fra matproduksjon. Fra 2016 viderefører vi arbeidet ved at alle dunprodukter fra Marmot bare inneholder dun som er sertifisert i henhold til de strenge kravene i RDS-standarden (Responsible Down Standard). Det vil si at hvert ledd av produksjonen blir gransket, fra gårdene til lageret vårt, slik at vi får full sporbarhet av hvor dunet kommer fra. Vi vil at forbrukerne skal føle seg trygge på at produktene våre holder dem varme, og at produktene har blitt produsert på en etisk forsvarlig måte.

What Is It?
PFCs (per- and poly-fluorinated chemicals) are all completely man-made chemicals which do not occur naturally. They are commonly used in DWR (durable water repellent) coatings and waterproof membranes. These fluorochemicals have been used for some time to give clothing water and stain resistant properties. Until fairly recently there were very few alternatives so as it became obvious that PFCs were harmful to the environment more focus fell upon the use of PFCs, especially within the Outdoor Activities sector.

Marmot
Marmot have developed a new 'permanent DWR' free from PFCs. GTI Aquavent is bonded to the DWR treatment with its yarn at the molecular level. This makes water bead on the surface, and Marmot claims won’t wash off to contaminate streams or lakes. All EvoDry garments from Marmot are made from upcycled yarn. Compared to new yarns, EvoDry uses less petroleum and energy. Lastly, EvoDry fabrics, laminations, and trims are free of PFCs.
